When you have followed Leeds as long as I have, 50 plus years, since I saw Billy and the boys back in 1974... I suppose walking out of the East Stand fuming at the team’s inability to hold on to a lead shouldn’t have shocked me but unfortunately it did. The 2-2 draw won’t end Leeds’ chances of promotion but it did put another dent in the promotion bus that last year totally went off the road and ended in a ditch at Wembley.
It’s not the first time things have gone wrong. Don Revie’s masterful team of the 60’s and 70’s had many times went it went belly up in the final weeks of season’s or cup finals. Some because of the Football League and referee’s being paid off or just shit at being a referee. Unfortunately since we rolled the dice and it gave up double sixes against Sunderland and Sheffield United, we seem to have lost the momentum once again of a team going for promotion.
Draws against teams you really should be beating brought back horrible memories of Easter Monday when Wigan won 2-1 with ten players, and last season’s bloody collapse after the international break when QPR spanked us on a Friday night and when Blackburn beat Leeds at Elland Road with a late goal. We all thought the football gods would this time smile on the long suffering Leeds fans by a nice and easy ride through to May with promotion assured.
As it turns out, that isn’t the ‘Leeds way’, so we face an anxious time from now till May the 5th. It doesn’t help that Burnley and Sheffield didn’t read the script and continued to pick up points whilst we gave them away like cheap Easter eggs. We go to Luton on Saturday and hope that there has been some kind of team meeting to bring them together, air their differences, if they have some and all agree that they have a goal and now they set out their stall to get it bloody done.
Surely we cannot end up like previous season’s when we just fall short. If we do I’m going to climb a high hill, sit for a while and probably drink myself senseless. COME ON LEEDS show us that you can give us a day we never got to do because of COVID regulations and let’s go up as bloody Champions!!
